7-Oswald's coffin up for auction

A ghoulish piece of American history is now up for sale to the highest bidder. The wooden coffin in which the man accused of assassinating John F. Kennedy was buried for 18 years is being auctioned off by Allen Baumgardner, owner of Baumgardner Funeral Home in Fort Worth, Texas. Baumgardner said he was selling the coffin, with the original embalming equipment and paperwork, because he felt it was time to do something with it. (AP)

6-Updated Kanji list totals 2,136

The government Nov. 30 updated the list of kanji designated for everyday use for the first time in 29 years, deleting five and adding 196, including difficult-to-write characters that have become easier to use with computers. The new total is 2,136.

In the postwar period, the list was first compiled in 1946, when 1,850 kanji were approved for common use. It was revised in 1981 to 1,945 characters.
In line with the new list announced by the Cabinet Office, the Justice Ministry revised a ministerial order to reflect the changes in its list of kanji that can be used for people's names. Government documents will be written using the new lists. (Kyodo News)

5-Jailed Chinese dissident wins Nobel

Imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo won the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize on Oct. 8 for using nonviolence to demand fundamental human rights in his homeland. The award ignited a furious response from China, which accused the Norwegian Nobel Committee of violating its own principles by honoring "a criminal."

Chinese state media immediately blacked out the news and Chinese government censors blocked Nobel Prize reports from Internet websites. China declared the decision would harm its relations with Norway — and the Nordic country responded saying that was a petty thing for a world power to do.This year's peace prize followed a long tradition of honoring dissidents around the world and was the first Nobel for China's dissident community since it resurfaced after the Communists launched economic but not political reforms three decades ago.Liu, 54, was sentenced last year to 11 years in prison for subversion. The Nobel committee said he was the first to be honored while still in prison, although other Nobel winners have been under house arrest or imprisoned before the prize.The Nobel committee praised Liu's pacifist approach, ignoring threats by Chinese diplomats before the announcement. 4-IVF pioneer wins Novel Prize in medicine

Robert Edwards of Britain won the 2010 Nobel Prize in medicine Oct. 4 for developing in vitro fertilization, a controversial breakthrough that ignited sharp criticism from religious leaders but helped millions of infertile couples in the past three decades have children.
Edwards, an 85-year-old professor emeritus at the University of Cambridge, started working on IVF as early as the 1950's. He developed the technique — in which egg cells are removed from a woman, fertilized outside her body and then implanted into the womb — together with gynecologist surgeon Patrick Steptoe, who died in 1988. On July 25, 1978, Louise Brown in Britain became the first baby born through the procedure, marking a revolution in fertility treatment.
Edward's achievements have made it possible to treat infertility. (AP)

3-London group scams Japanese

Three people have been jailed for carrying out a scam on more than 100 Japanese tourists in central London. The group targeted sightseers at such places as the British Museum and Oxford Street, with one of the three, a woman, posing as a tourist and asking the victims for directions or to take a photo for her. The other two, pretending to be police officers, would then approach, demand details of the travelers' identity and take their credit cards, which were later used to withdraw cash or make expensive purchases, the report said.
