6-Majority upset with Obama on oil spill

A majority of Americans disapprove of how President Barack Obama has handled the devastating Gulf oil spill though far more blame BP for what people call a sluggish two-month response, according to a new Associated Press-GfK poll released June 15. The survey found that 52 percent don't approve of Obama's handling of the spill, a significant increase from last month when a big chunk of Americans withheld judgment. But Obama's overall job performance rating didn't take a hit; it stayed virtually the same at 50 percent. (AP)

5-Attack on Israel costs Thomas seat

Helen Thomas, the opinionated White House correspondent who used her seat in the front row of history to grill 10 presidents and often exasperate them, lost her storied perch June 7 in a flap over saying Israelis should get "out of Palestine." Thomas, 89, who made her name as a bulldog for United Press International and was a pioneer for women in journalism, abruptly retired as a columnist for Hearst News Service. 4-Hollywood actor Dennis Hopper dies

Dennis Hopper, who brought counterculture to Hollywood with the movie Easy Rider and led an acting and directing career marked by successes, failures and comebacks, has died at age 74. Hopper, who was twice nominated for Oscars and earned a star this year on the Walk of Fame, died May 29 at his home in the Venice neighborhood of Los Angeles, family friend Alex Hitz said. Hopper had been diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009. (AP)

3-Suicides over lost jobs up sharply

Suicides in Japan in 2009 stayed above 30,000 for the 12th consecutive year, but those linked to job losses spiked, defying claims that the economy is on the mend, a National Police Agency (NPA) survey showed May 13. The number of suicides in the reporting year totaled 32,845, up 1.85 percent from the preceding year, the NPA said in a revised report. Suicides traced to job losses, however, surged 65.3 percent to 1,071, while those attributed to hardships jumped 34.3 percent to 1,731. (Kyodo News)

2-Sea ice crystals foil gulf oil boxes

A novel but risky attempt to use a 100-ton steel-and-concrete box to cover the deep-water oil well gushing toxic crude into the Gulf of Mexico was aborted May 8 after ice crystals encased it, an ominous development as thick blobs of tar began washing up on Alabama's white sand beaches. The setback left the mission to cap the ruptured well in doubt. It took about two weeks to build the box and three days to cart it out and slowly lower it to the well, but the frozen depths are proving too much for it to handle. (AP)
