5-Jailed Chinese dissident wins Nobel

Imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo won the 2010 Nobel Peace Prize on Oct. 8 for using nonviolence to demand fundamental human rights in his homeland. The award ignited a furious response from China, which accused the Norwegian Nobel Committee of violating its own principles by honoring "a criminal."

Chinese state media immediately blacked out the news and Chinese government censors blocked Nobel Prize reports from Internet websites. China declared the decision would harm its relations with Norway — and the Nordic country responded saying that was a petty thing for a world power to do.This year's peace prize followed a long tradition of honoring dissidents around the world and was the first Nobel for China's dissident community since it resurfaced after the Communists launched economic but not political reforms three decades ago.Liu, 54, was sentenced last year to 11 years in prison for subversion. The Nobel committee said he was the first to be honored while still in prison, although other Nobel winners have been under house arrest or imprisoned before the prize.The Nobel committee praised Liu's pacifist approach, ignoring threats by Chinese diplomats before the announcement. 4-IVF pioneer wins Novel Prize in medicine

Robert Edwards of Britain won the 2010 Nobel Prize in medicine Oct. 4 for developing in vitro fertilization, a controversial breakthrough that ignited sharp criticism from religious leaders but helped millions of infertile couples in the past three decades have children.
Edwards, an 85-year-old professor emeritus at the University of Cambridge, started working on IVF as early as the 1950's. He developed the technique — in which egg cells are removed from a woman, fertilized outside her body and then implanted into the womb — together with gynecologist surgeon Patrick Steptoe, who died in 1988. On July 25, 1978, Louise Brown in Britain became the first baby born through the procedure, marking a revolution in fertility treatment.

3-London group scams Japanese

Three people have been jailed for carrying out a scam on more than 100 Japanese tourists in central London. The group targeted sightseers at such places as the British Museum and Oxford Street, with one of the three, a woman, posing as a tourist and asking the victims for directions or to take a photo for her. The other two, pretending to be police officers, would then approach, demand details of the travelers' identity and take their credit cards, which were later used to withdraw cash or make expensive purchases, the report said. 1-Moon may be shrinking very slowly

The moon may be shrinking but it will not be disappearing any time soon. New research indicates cracks in the moon's crust that have formed as the interior has cooled and shrunk over the last billion years or so. Scientists have identified 14 landforms called lobate scarps scattered over the surface of the moon, said Thomas R. Watters of the Center for Earth and Planetary Studies at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. The size of the scarps indicates a shrinkage in the size of the moon of about 100 meters, which would not be nearly enough to be noticed with the naked eye. (AP)

     I went to the sea with my friends. The place is at south of Sinjuku.  we enjoyed swimming mainly, but water is too cold to swim because it was almost autumn season. 8-Monroe chest X-rays fetch $45,000

The apparently endless market for images of Marilyn Monroe now extends to inside the bombshell's body. A set of three Monroe chest X-rays from a 1954 hospital visit sold June 27 for $45,000 (¥4 million) at the Hollywood Legends auction at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. Julien's Auctions, which sold the Monroe X-rays, had estimated before the sale that they would only fetch a total of around $3,000 (¥260,000). The average income of lawmakers hit a record low yen22.23 million in 2009, down yen2.6 million from the previous year, according to data released June 30 by the Diet. The survey found that 52 percent don't approve of Obama's handling of the spill, a significant increase from last month when a big chunk of Americans withheld judgment. 4-Hollywood actor Dennis Hopper dies

3-Suicides over lost jobs up sharply

Suicides in Japan in 2009 stayed above 30,000 for the 12th consecutive year, but those linked to job losses spiked, defying claims that the economy is on the mend, a National Police Agency (NPA) survey showed May 13. The number of suicides in the reporting year totaled 32,845, up 1.85 percent from the preceding year, the NPA said in a revised report. Suicides traced to job losses, however, surged 65.3 percent to 1,071, while those attributed to hardships jumped 34.3 percent to 1,731. (Kyodo News)

2-Sea ice crystals foil gulf oil boxes

A novel but risky attempt to use a 100-ton steel-and-concrete box to cover the deep-water oil well gushing toxic crude into the Gulf of Mexico was aborted May 8 after ice crystals encased it, an ominous development as thick blobs of tar began washing up on Alabama's white sand beaches. The setback left the mission to cap the ruptured well in doubt.
